The advantages of Virtual training in this area over existing methods are many; Trainees can practice within the virtual theatre without using valuable 'real' theatre resources, indeed, the VR equipment needn't actually be resident at the hospital, as it is fully portable, and as such, could be a shared resource between hospitals.

Trainees can practice procedures over and over again, with performance data being saved for later evaluation by either the trainer, the user himself, or even as part of a continuous assessment process.

The VR hardware is fully networkable, which means several people can share the same environment, allowing the trainer to be beside the trainee(s) as incidents occur. It is also worth mentioning that these machines can be linked both locally (in the same room or building) or remotely via ISDN (to any where/country).

Within the virtual environment the user is confronted with a virtual patient, and has access to monitoring, ventilating and anesthesia equipment common to operating theatres around the country today.

He also has the ability to operate this equipment by means of hand gestures within the virtual world, in conjunction with a simple menuing system.  He has access to, and can adjust; the rotameters, a selection of volatile agents, and can administer various relaxants, opiates, and a range of other substances to the virtual patient intravenously

The software's next phase was to incorporate critical incidents, which could be randomly or externally controlled, to allow assessment of trainee anesthetist reaction times.
